The first camp, organized between August 12 – 16, 2019, for the Transylvanian Hungarian blind and visually impaired children, parents and companions at the Harghita Christian Camp is over. There were over 60 participants from Hargita, Kovászna, Maros, Szilágy and Kolozs Counties. As far as we know, there was no camp dedicated exclusively to the Hungarian visually impaired and blind children and their relatives, therefore it is a great pleasure for us the fact that our association’s activity over the past year acknowledged this state of art and gave to the Hungarian visually impaired children and adults, their parents or companions the opportunity and setting to meet, discuss, debate, share and cope with their questions, problems, life issues. They had the opportunity to join group sessions, panels and individual discussions, presentations and workshops. They also had the chance to share experiences, to seek for answers, solutions and counselling in order to cope with their problems. The afternoon leisure activities were new and positive experiences for the children. They had the opportunity to express their creativity and joy in felting, bathing, singing, acting, visiting a traditional cake craft-shop, encountering a blind guide dog, building a campfire and partying.
The blind and visually impaired children and adults, their parents and companions were accompanied in their endeavour by special educations teachers, pedagogists, psychologists, coaches, and IT trainers, all volunteers for this mission.These volunteers were graduates in Psychology or Special Education of the Applied Psychology Institute of the Babes-Bolyai University, pedagogists working for the School for Blind in Hungary, co-workers of the National Hungarian Blind and Visually Impaired Association, a Hungarian language teacher from the Blind School in Kolozsvár, a kindergarten teacher from Székelyudvarhely, a visually impaired pedagogist, a life coach from Hungary and other professionals involved in education of children with special needs. We were able to succeed due to their selfless and irreplaceable volunteering work and to offer the visually impaired children, adults, their parents and companions four unforgettable days.
